Ready to smash your way to burger bliss? Let’s dive in!

For Smash Burger Patties

  • Ground Beef – Use 80/20 ground beef (1 1/2 lbs), divided into 8 portions (about 3 oz each). You can use either leaner or fattier beef depending on your preference.
  • Salt – Add to taste. Season the patties for extra flavor.
  • Black Pepper – Add to taste. This will give a nice kick to the burger.
  • Garlic Powder – Optional. Adds a nice depth of flavor to the patty.
  • Cheddar Cheese – 4 slices of medium cheddar cheese. Thick slices work best for a gooey, melt-in-your-mouth experience.

For Burger Sauce

  • Mayonnaise – 1/3 cup. This forms the creamy base of your burger sauce.
  • Yellow Mustard – 1 tsp. Adds a tangy flavor to complement the richness of the mayonnaise.

For Toppings

  • Brioche Buns – 4 burger buns. These soft, slightly sweet buns work perfectly with Smash Burgers.
  • Iceberg Lettuce – 2 cups, shredded. Adds crunch and freshness to your burger.
  • Tomato – 1 large, sliced. Fresh tomato adds juiciness to balance the richness of the patty.
  • Red Onion – 1/2, sliced into thin rings. Provides a mild bite to complement the flavors.
  • Dill Pickles – 2, cut into 12 slices. Adds a zesty crunch to your burger.

Ingredients

For the Smash Burger Patties:
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef (80/20 blend), divided into 8 portions (3 oz each)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Garlic powder (optional), to taste
  • 4 slices medium cheddar cheese (preferably thick-sliced)
For the Burger Sauce:
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
For the Toppings:
  • 4 burger buns (brioche buns work great)
  • 2 cups shredded iceberg lettuce
  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • 1/2 red onion, sliced into thin rings
  • 2 dill pickles, sliced into 12 pieces

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Beef Patties:
  • Divide the ground beef into 8 equal portions, about 3 oz each. Roll them loosely into balls. Cover and refrigerate until ready to cook (keeping the meat cold is important).
  1. Prepare the Toppings and Buns:
  • Trim any wilted leaves from the lettuce and finely shred it.
  • Slice the tomato, onion, and pickles.
  • Butter the buns and toast them on medium heat until golden on the buttered side.
  1. Cook the Patties:
  • Preheat a griddle or large skillet to medium-high heat.
  • Place 2-4 meatballs onto the hot griddle. Quickly cover them with parchment paper and smash down firmly to form a thin patty.
  • Once smashed, remove the parchment paper, season the patties with salt, pepper, and optional garlic powder. Add a half teaspoon of burger sauce to each patty.
  • Cook for 2 minutes, or until seared and juices rise to the surface. Scrape under the patties with a spatula (at a 45Ëš angle) to lift them, then flip.
  • Cook for another minute, then top half of the patties with a slice of cheese. Place the second patty on top, melting the cheese in between. Repeat with the remaining patties.
  1. Assemble the Burgers:
  • Spread sauce on the bottom of each toasted bun. Layer with pickles, shredded lettuce, tomato slices, and onion rings.
  • Place the double patty on top and finish with the top bun.

Smash Burger Recipe with Easy Sauce

  1. Can I use a different type of cheese for the Smash Burger?

Yes, you can use any type of cheese you prefer, such as American, Swiss, or Gouda. However, cheddar melts beautifully and adds a great flavor, making it the top choice for this recipe.

  1. Can I make the burger sauce ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can make the sauce a day or two in advance and store it in an airtight container in the fridge. It’ll be ready to go when you’re ready to assemble the burgers.

  1. How can I make sure the patties stay juicy while cooking?

Make sure the beef is cold when you form the patties, and don’t overwork the meat. Smash the patties just before cooking, and avoid pressing them too much while cooking to preserve the juiciness.

  1. What if I don’t have brioche buns?

If you don’t have brioche buns, you can use any soft burger buns like potato rolls or regular hamburger buns. Brioche adds a nice sweetness, but any soft bun will work well.

  1. Can I add other toppings to the Smash Burgers?

Yes! Feel free to get creative with your toppings. You can add sautéed mushrooms, pickled jalapeños, or even a fried egg for extra flavor. Just be mindful of not overcrowding the burger with too many toppings!
