When you make hummus from scratch, the difference is immediate—fresh, smooth, and far better than anything from the store.
This is the kind of recipe you’ll turn to again and again, whether you’re prepping a quick snack, an appetizer for guests, or an easy add-on to weeknight meals.
Serve it with warm pita and fresh veggies for a simple dip everyone loves.

For the Hummus
- Chickpeas – these are the base of the hummus and give it body and structure. Using cooked, well-rinsed chickpeas helps keep the flavor clean and the texture smooth.
- Tahini – this adds richness and a slightly nutty flavor. A smooth, high-quality tahini is key for achieving ultra-creamy hummus.
- Extra-Virgin Olive Oil – adds depth and silkiness to the hummus while rounding out the flavors.
- Fresh Lemon Juice – brings brightness and balance, cutting through the richness of the tahini and chickpeas.
- Garlic – just one clove adds enough bite without overpowering the hummus.
- Sea Salt – enhances all the flavors and helps everything taste more vibrant.
- Water – used to help the hummus blend smoothly and reach your desired consistency.
For Serving & Garnish
- Paprika, Red Pepper Flakes, and/or Fresh Parsley – optional toppings that add color, flavor, and a little contrast.
- Warm Pita Bread and/or Fresh Veggies – perfect for scooping and serving alongside the hummus.

Notes
- *Tahini brands I prefer are: Cedar’s, Seed + Mill, and Soom

- Can I use canned chickpeas?
Yes, just make sure to drain and rinse them well before blending. There’s no need to cook them again. - How can I make the hummus extra smooth?
Use a high-speed blender and add the water slowly while blending. If you have time, removing the chickpea skins will make it even creamier. - What can I use instead of tahini?
Tahini is recommended for the best flavor and texture. If you don’t have it, you can substitute a small amount of plain Greek yogurt or a mild nut butter, but the taste will be slightly different. - How do I fix bland hummus?
Add more lemon juice or a pinch of salt at a time. Hummus should taste bright and well-seasoned, so adjust until it tastes right to you. - How do I store homemade hummus?
Keep it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4–5 days. If it thickens, stir in a bit of water or olive oil before serving.
