Some of my favorite dinners are the simplest ones—the kind that slowly bake in the oven while the kitchen fills with a sweet, smoky aroma. On busy evenings, this baked BBQ chicken breast is the meal I come back to again and again.
There’s something comforting about brushing the chicken with sauce, sliding it into the oven, and letting it do its thing while you set the table or unwind.
As it bakes, the BBQ sauce thickens and caramelizes, locking in moisture and turning ordinary chicken breasts into something tender, saucy, and deeply satisfying.
It’s an easy, dependable dinner that feels cozy without being heavy—one you can make once and enjoy all week long.

For Baked BBQ Chicken Breast
- Chicken Breasts – Use large chicken breasts that are similar in size so they cook evenly and stay juicy.
- Avocado Oil – Helps the seasonings stick to the chicken and keeps it moist while baking. It’s also used to lightly grease the baking dish.
- Smoked Paprika – Adds a subtle smoky flavor that pairs perfectly with BBQ sauce and gives the chicken great color.
- Garlic Powder – Brings savory depth without overpowering the sauce.
- Onion Powder – Enhances the overall flavor with a mild, slightly sweet onion note.
- Kosher Salt – Seasons the chicken evenly and helps bring out all the flavors.
- White Pepper – Adds gentle heat and warmth without being too bold.
- BBQ Sauce – The star of the dish. It coats the chicken, caramelizes in the oven, and keeps everything tender and flavorful.

Bake and flip
Transfer the dish to the oven and bake. After 20 minutes, turn the chicken over and brush with more BBQ sauce. -

Serve
Remove from the oven, slice if desired, and serve warm with the remaining BBQ sauce on the side.
- Chicken size: Choose breasts that are similar in size to promote even cooking.
- Oil swaps: Avocado oil can be replaced with canola, olive, or grapeseed oil.
- Paprika: Smoked paprika provides deeper flavor, but regular paprika works if needed.
- Pepper option: Ground black pepper can stand in for white pepper.
- BBQ sauce: A low-sugar or sugar-free sauce is a good option for lighter meals.
- Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave.
- Oven variation: Cooking times may vary depending on your oven.

- How do I keep baked BBQ chicken breasts from drying out?
The key is even sizing and proper timing. Use chicken breasts that are similar in size so they cook evenly, and brush on the BBQ sauce partway through baking to help seal in moisture. - Can I use a different oil if I don’t have avocado oil?
Yes. Olive oil, canola oil, or grapeseed oil all work well and won’t change the flavor or texture of the chicken. - Do I need to cover the chicken while it bakes?
No, covering isn’t necessary. Baking uncovered allows the BBQ sauce to thicken and caramelize nicely. If you prefer extra moisture, you can loosely cover the dish for the first half of baking. - How can I tell when the chicken is fully cooked?
A meat thermometer is the most reliable method. The chicken is done when the internal temperature reaches 165°F in the thickest part. - Can I make this recipe ahead of time?
Yes. You can season the chicken and store it covered in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before baking. Add the BBQ sauce right before cooking for the best texture.
