For Irish Soda Bread:
- Flour – All-purpose flour is the base of this bread, giving it structure and a light texture.
- Butter – Softened butter provides moisture and a rich flavor. You can substitute with Irish butter if preferred.
- Sugar – Four tablespoons of sugar add the perfect hint of sweetness, balancing the tangy buttermilk.
- Baking Soda & Baking Powder – These two ingredients act as leaveners, helping the bread rise without yeast.
- Salt – A pinch of salt enhances the overall flavor and brings out the best in the other ingredients.
- Buttermilk – Adds a slight tang and helps the bread rise due to the reaction with baking soda.
- Egg – Adds richness and helps bind the dough together for a soft and tender crumb.
- Melted Butter and Buttermilk (for brushing) – Brushing the dough with this mixture before baking adds flavor and a golden, shiny crust.

Easy Irish Soda Bread
Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup butter, softened
- 4 tablespoons white sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- ¼ cup melted butter
- ¼ cup buttermilk (for brushing)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a large baking sheet.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, softened butter, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the buttermilk and egg until well combined.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it a few times to bring it together. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet. The dough will be slightly sticky.
- In a small bowl, mix the melted butter with ¼ cup buttermilk. Brush the top of the loaf with this mixture.
- Using a sharp knife, cut an ‘X’ shape into the top of the loaf.
- Bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. You can brush the loaf with the butter-buttermilk mixture every 15 minutes while baking for extra flavor and shine.
- Allow the bread to cool slightly before slicing. Enjoy!
- How to Store: Once cooled, wrap the soda bread tightly in plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container. Store it at room temperature for up to four days.
- Freezing: For longer storage, wrap the cooled loaf in plastic wrap, then aluminum foil. Freeze for up to two months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before serving.
- Add raisins, currants, or even caraway seeds for added flavor.
- Try a touch of orange zest for a bright, citrusy twist.
- Serve alongside your favorite Irish dishes like corned beef and cabbage for a classic pairing.

- Why is my Irish soda bread dense?
Don’t worry, this happens! Using high-protein flour can make the bread dense. Stick to all-purpose flour for a lighter texture. Also, be sure not to over-mix the dough—just gently bring it together. It’s meant to be a bit shaggy, not smooth!
- Can I make my own buttermilk?
Totally! Just mix 1 cup of milk with 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes before adding it to your dough. It’s an easy fix when you’re out of buttermilk!
- How do I avoid a hard crust?
To keep the crust tender, wrap the hot bread in a clean towel as soon as it comes out of the oven. This traps the moisture and helps soften the crust—making it much easier to slice!
- Can I skip the raisins or caraway seeds?
Absolutely! Traditional Irish soda bread doesn’t include raisins or caraway seeds. You can leave them out for a more authentic version, or add them if you’re craving a twist!
- What’s the best way to store leftovers?
Once your bread has cooled, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or store it in an airtight container. It’ll last up to four days on the counter. If you want to keep it longer, wrap it well and freeze it for up to two months.
